First Cabinets brought in

Update 8/2/2008:

It's been a long week. Cabinets are definitely not coming as fast as I'd hoped. I had to rebuild one cabinet 3 times (the far right one on the wall with the stove). First time was because the measurements were off, and me eyeballing it, didn't measure exactly and the stove wasn't exactly centered, so did it again.

The island cabinet "complex" took 3 days. To be fair, it's like 3 cabinets, but with the under-mount sink requiring special framing, and the sink itself actually too big and encroaching in the side cabinets, it took a lot of finiggling. It probably weighed near 200 lbs when finished. It took the four of us (TJ, Michelle, Charles and me) to get it in the house.

Michelle and I cranked out the double oven cabinet (nearly 8 feet tall) in just over 4 hours. We were pooped by the end and it was about 11pm.

There are so many angles around the island, it is proving to be a bit more than I originally imagined. Every cabinet is different. I literally have so few cabinets that are identical that it's really slowing things down. It also doesn't help that the measurements on the drawings weren't exact, so having to recheck everything twice.

Right now, I'm just hoping I can get the rest of the base cabinets done by this coming Friday, then I go camping and back to work on the 11th. I'll have to finish the uppers / desk / etc after I go back to work.

I started bringing down the cabinets that I had in my shop. These were taking up a lot of space! That's my son Jackson, praying that we get this kitchen done ;-)

You can notice how we dropped the ceiling - the beams aren't nearly as large. You can also see how it opens up the kitchen. I really like how we can now see the log going all the way across at the ceiling. The walls are textured and Michelle's begun to paint.

This next shot shows how we've crammed a lot of stuff into the back corner. This will eventually be the new dining room.

Here's a nice shot of the double oven cabinet. It's lonely right now by itself, but it's placement was critical so I can now figure out the sizes of the cabinets to the left and right.

Here's another good shot from a different perspective.
