Me and the Movies
For the perusal of whoever visits, you may enjoy my thoughts on movies. I've watched over 500 movies and while I haven't written a single review, for those interested, you can peruse my lists for what I've watched & some tidbits on what I thought of them. In 2002, I decided it was time to start logging & keeping track of all the movies I've watched & it's a daunting task. I've catalogued all the movies I've watched since then and while I've rated many movies that I watched before then, I haven't been able to get enough time to write a review on every single one of them. Usually what happens is I end up re-watching them & then capturing a review then.
I don't write reviews because there are too many who do and they do so much of a better job than me. Go to www.dvdtalk.com or www.rottentomatoes.com for some excellent reviews on movies. For seeing what others like you & me think, visit www.imdb.com
What's missing in professional reviews is the "essence" of a movie. Reading reviews is about 80% telling of the story & then nit picking on the character development, the predictability, how it's not believable, blah, blah, blah. Fugettaboutit. Did they convince you to go out & rent that movie tonight? Probably not. So, you can read my list & see what did I think of it? What were the first words that came to me? Perhaps these will ring a bell with you, perhaps not. I feel strongly about the movies I watch & I don't always agree with the critics, but I love to recommend movies.
But recommending movies involves taste and taste is a personal thing. With me, taste depends on the type of movie I'm watching. I'm not into any certain type of movies any more than I am into any kind of books or music (I have a wide range of tastes in both of these regards) This is why you can see two movies on my list that you could never in a million years compare side by side and yet BINGO, there they are, both rated similarly. Movies to me are a form of entertainment. How well I am entertained and to what extent I believe the two hours I gave up was worth it when compared to the other things I could be doing?? A better way to look at my rating system is to think of them as "My movie enjoyment indicator".
Tastes evolve. I have to admit, I'm growing as a movie watcher. I'm reading a lot of reviews and I'm searching out movies that are definitely not mainstream. Also, I'm avoiding a lot of movies. 80% of what you will find on the "new release" list at your local rental shop, I will forgo. Why? Because I read what others have to say about them and decide it's just not worth my time. There are simply way too many good movies, that I need to make decisions on what to watch & what not to. I still get the occasional lemon, but that's normally because I'm weak and can't find a movie I was looking for & get desperate. Oh well. Just need to do more research.
I watch 98% of all my movies in my home theater and 99% of them are DVD's. I was getting really frustrated with the quality & quantity of good movies at the movie theaters, and while I liked renting movies, I simply was not satisfied with my movie experience at home. So I changed my ways, built a nice home theater and now am in a mode where I'm accustomed to waiting the 4-6 months for the DVD's to come out. Although a few do entice me to the movie theaters because I simply cannot wait!
